Lessons In Leadership
Learn, Lead & Succeed!
"Education is an ornament in prosperity and a refuge in adversity." - Artistotle
What is this global economy everyone keeps speaking of?
If you have not yet felt the pressure of an expanded marketplace, it’s only a matter of time before you will. There is an important race taking place, and we are all right in the middle of it. No one has the luxury of “opting out” of this important contest.
In order to come out ahead in the new global economy, it’s important that you begin to think of yourself as the President & CEO of YOUR HOUSEHOLD, Inc. The days of feeling secure working for one company for 30 years and retiring with the beautiful gold watch are gone.
The key to success in this new age of global competition is to “Add Value”. If you want to maintain your current standard of living, you need to begin to assess the real market value (RMV)your provide to your organization. Take appropriate steps to improve yourself in order to raise the value you bring to your employer. Begin to compete now for your future position while you can do so on your own terms. It is far better to start preparing yourself now, rather than being forced to compete, ill-prepared, after receiving a notice of mergers and layoffs. Think it can't happen to you? Think again! Whatever your current position, you are making either a positive or negative financial contribution to your organization. Ask yourself the question, "Does the value I bring to my organization, equate to more or less than the cost of my salary?" It’s important to be extremely honest with yourself on this key question. Realize today that your position in the company is only as secure as your ability to consistently generate a financial contribution over and above what it costs the organization in salary and benefit costs to employ you.
Looking to earn more money? EXCELLENT - you absolutely should be seeking to earn more. However, it’s important that you understand that the term “earn” does not equate to "I feel I’m entitled to". The clear definition of the word “earn” means to make money by working; deserve something; and to produce interest or dividends. Therefore, in order to earn more, you must focus on adding more value to your organization. Obviously, you could earn more money simply be going out and getting a second job. In doing this, however, you are still exerting more effort and adding additional value to the economy. You are just doing so through two separate employers.
In order to make more money in your current position, you need to first ask yourself if you are working in an industry that is growing or one that is on the decline. If your industry is decreasing in size, you must understand that your opportunities for moving up and earning more may become increasingly limited. However, if you prepare yourself to add greater value to another organization in a growing industry, your chances of earn more in the future improve.
Bottom line, if you seek to possess job security, you must continually work to raise your value to your organization. Your current level of education, knowledge, skills and experience – are the result of personal and professional investments you’ve made in yourself up to this point in time. Do not make the mistake of expecting those initial investments to continue to carry you through to retirement. We must all continue to invest in ourselves, to learn and grow. So whatever job you are doing today, begin to plan and prepare yourself for your next position. Remember always that there are jobs with futures and jobs without futures. Make certain you are continually lining yourself up to hold a position with a company in a growing industry and you’ll always hold a job with a future.
Does this all sound like a lot of hard work? Well yes, it can be. However, the work that needs to be done can only be determined by you. The pace at which it is completed is also up to you. Setting clear goals and breaking them down into bite-sized pieces over the coming year, is a great way to plan without feeling overwhelmed by the whole process.
GET EXCITED! There are more opportunities available to you in this ever growing economy than at any time in history. You can quite literally become, acquire, or do - just about anything that you can envision as long as you take steps now to prepare yourself for bigger and better opportunities. It's never crowded at the top so there is plenty of room for YOU! Take your rightful place among the successful, by remaining focused on what you need to accomplish.
Your primary responsibility as President and CEO of YOUR HOUSEHOLD, Inc., is to increase the value of your company stock. Continue to learn, grow and make yourself an invaluable commodity, and watch your stock soar! We’d like to help get you started! We encourage you to take advantage of the newest free tool – our recently released Leadership Coaching Course. See you in the next section.

Our Open-Door Policy
Making communication flow easier is an important task. This is something that we assess often because it truly is that important. We need to know what is on your mind, what your needs are, and what you'd like to see from us in the future.
In addition, we want to be certain that you have multiple ways of staying in touch with us. To this end, we offer the following:
Whitelisting
One of the biggest issues we have in our efforts to communicate with our readers is that some of our subscribers do not receive our newsletters because their spam filters are blocking our emails - even though we NEVER use spam.
Increasingly, ISPs (ex., earthlink.net, comcast.net) and mail services (ex., Hotmail) are using filtering systems to try and keep spam out of customers' InBoxes. Sometimes, though, they accidentally filter the e-mail that you do want to receive. Please do not blame your ISP or mail service. The volume of spam is enormous and the algorithms to figure out what is spam (and what is not) are complicated. So mistakes do happen We all have to deal, unfortunately, with the fallout of what spammers do to the Internet. Unfortunately, this issue is not going away anytime soon. However, you can take action now to ensure your receive every one of our newsletters. You can "whitelist" our site address with your email provider. Whitelisting simply means you will add our site to your list of acceptable sites that you wish to allow past any spam filters. Check your email provider instructions on how to whitelist us so you never miss an issue of our newsletter.
Web Log (BLOG)/RSS Feed
Another way for you to stay in touch with us is to add the Leadership Tools Web Log (BLOG) to your RSS reader. Not sure was an RSS reader is? No problem, simply go to our WEB-LOG (BLOG) PAGE
(If you have a Yahoo or MSN home page you can easily add our BLOG/RSS Feed to your list of daily content. Just click on the Yahoo or MSN button at the bottom of our BLOG page, or search "Leadership Tools News" in the Search Content section in your MyYahoo or MyMSN homepage.
You will notice that many of our BLOG entries cover various leadership issues, site news and leadership lessons.)
Site Map
We now provide an updated SITE MAP PAGE for our readers. The Site Map was created in an effort to make navigation of our site easier and more convenient.
In summary, in the spirit of adopting an "Open Door Policy", readers now have:
- the ability to ensure each newsletter is received by whitelisting our site address
- access to our daily BLOG
- the ability to more easily find what you are looking for through our new site map
Remember, the best way to ensure you never miss an update or monthly issue of our newsletter is to add our RSS/BLOG feed to your MyYahoo, MyMSN, Google or other RSS feed reader today.
