Lessons In Leadership

Succession Planning
Looking To The Future!

"Opportunity rarely knocks on your door. Knock rather on opportunity’s door if you ardently wish to enter."
- C. Forbes

Succession planning is an activity that more and more organizations are embracing in an effort to ensure that key roles can be filled with quality individuals within the company.

Employees who want to take full advantage of the succession planning process need to have a clear awareness of what attributes and experience upper management is looking for.

Successful candidates in the succession planning process will master the following four areas:

  1. Acquire Organizational Knowledge Top leaders are constantly scanning the environment both within and outside their own organization.

Ensure you remain up-to-date on your organization and its competitors by reading annual reports and other relevant publications.

Following the key developments of your main competitors will provide you with valuable information that will impress upper management in future discussions. Your interest in the industry will highlight your ambition and self-starter qualities.

Learn a much as you can about your organization. This knowledge will serve your well in any role you hold, including your current job.

  2. Build a Solid Network It would be difficult to undervalue the importance of establishing and maintaining a quality network that supports your ambition.

Identify and develop mutually beneficial relationships with experienced people both within and outside your company.

Make efforts to join special activities at work (I.e., committees, task forces, etc.) and outside your organization (I.e., associations, social events, community activities, etc.) as a way of meeting people who can support you.

Do your part to assist and support those within your network. Invest time and effort in helping them get what they want so that they will be eager to assist you when you need them.

  3. Prove Your Worth! The best way to get noticed by upper management is to be a top performer in what you are currently doing.

Employees too often make the mistake of thinking that “just as soon as I get a management job, I will show them just what I can do”.

The fact is that you can LEAD in any role. While you may not possess the authority to tell others what to do – you can still positively influence others to try harder, increase quality, provide better service and support the goals of the organization they work for.

In short, real leaders – LEAD. You can also be certain that future leaders, lead before they hired to lead.

Those in upper management would give anything if only the entire workforce would fully embrace their ideas, goals and objectives without any convincing on their part. The best way to become a valued employee is to embrace the goals of the company and do your part to support and promote those objectives.

  4. Get Yourself Ready! Succession planning in any organization will identify those individuals within the organization who are best prepared to move into future key leadership roles.

Right now, you are either ready for that next step, or you are not ready.

To ensure that you ready for the job, when the opportunity arises, you need to do everything you can to improve yourself.

Leaders are continually self assessing their abilities and effectiveness. They are always on the look out for ways to improve themselves. They seek out those who can provide new and innovative ideas, tools and resources.

You need to take full ownership of your own learning curve. Once you own it, you’ll have no choice but to recognize your strengths and weaknesses.

Take action now to address areas that needs improvement. These same areas may well be the key attributes that will end up getting you the job!

Managers who wish to take full advantage of the succession planning process are well advised to approach the process from the eyes of those who will be assessing them.

Once you have determined what upper management values and is looking for in their future leaders, you can quickly put yourself on a path of self-improvement that will increase your chances for promotion in your organization.

Use the succession planning process to your advantage. Look at the process as a way to prepare yourself and increase your value within the organization.

"Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work."
- Thomas Edison

Our Open-Door Policy.
Making communication flow easier is an important task. This is something that we assess often because it truly is that important. We need to know what is on your mind, what your needs are, and what you'd like to see from us in the future.

In addition, we want to be certain that you have multiple ways of staying in touch with us. To this end, we offer the following:

Whitelisting
One of the biggest issues we have in our efforts to communicate with our readers is that some of our subscribers do not receive our newsletters because their spam filters are blocking our emails – even though we NEVER use spam.

Increasingly, ISPs (ex., earthlink.net, comcast.net) and mail services (ex., Hotmail) are using filtering systems to try and keep spam out of customers' InBoxes. Sometimes, though, they accidentally filter the e-mail that you do want to receive.

Please do not blame your ISP or mail service. The volume of spam is enormous and the algorithms to figure out what is spam (and what is not) are complicated. So mistakes do happen

We all have to deal, unfortunately, with the fallout of what spammers do to the Internet.

Unfortunately, this issue is not going away anytime soon. However, you can take action now to ensure your receive every one of our newsletters. You can “whitelist" our site address with your email provider.

Whitelisting simply means you will add our site to your list of acceptable sites that you wish to allow past any spam filters.

Check your email provider instructions on how to whitelist us so you never miss an issue of our newsletter.

Web Log (BLOG)
Another way for you to stay in touch with us is to add the Leadership Tools Web Log (BLOG) to your RSS reader. Not sure was an RSS reader is? No problem, simply go to our WEB-LOG (BLOG) PAGE

(If you have a Yahoo or MSN home page you can easily add our BLOG to your list of daily content. Just click on the Yahoo button at the bottom of our BLOG page, or search “Leadership Tools News” in the Search Content section in My Yahoo or My MSN.

You will notice that many of our BLOG entries cover various leadership issues, site news and leadership lessons.)

Site Map
We now provide an updated SITE MAP PAGE for our readers. The Site Map was created in an effort to make navigation of our site easier and more convenient.

In summary, in the spirit of adopting an "Open Door Policy", readers now have:

  • the ability to ensure each newsletter is received by whitelisting our site address
  • access to our daily BLOG
  • the ability to more easily find what you are looking for through our new site map

We look forward to hearing from you throughout 2005!
